Dr. Shiyong Lu

Dr. Shiyong Lu is currently an assistant professor and the director of the Scientific Workflow Research Laboratory (the SWR Lab) at Wayne State University. His research interests focus on scientific workflows with various scientific applications including bioinformatics. Dr. Lu is the founder and currently the chair of the IEEE International Workshop on Scientific Workflows. The following are his reflections on the Computer Science department as a PhD. student:

As a Ph.D. student in the Department of Computer Science, it is my great pleasure to share with you my academic experience during the past few years.

I began my research in transaction processing with my advisor, Arthur J. Bernstein. He is a great advisor and from him I have learned many principles of being a professional researcher. I have also benefited greatly from stimulating discussions with my colleagues from different research groups. In addition to working with my advisor, I have enjoyably collaborated with several other faculty in different fields, including model-checking e-commerce protocols and algorithm analysis when I took advanced courses. This greatly broadened my breadth of fields and enriched my potential research directions. I have also been supervising several master projects that not only motivate me to explore different ideas, but also improve my ability to lead projects.
I enjoy the research environment here so much and I believe my growth here will definitely bring me a promising future. After graduation, I hope to find a tenure-track faculty position and continue to pursue research in concurrency and e-commerce protocols.
